Tooth Extractions Nottingham MD

Tooth Removal

You and Drs. Lyn or Tofigh may determine that you need a tooth extraction for any number of reasons. Some teeth are extracted because they are severely decayed; others may have advanced periodontal disease, or have broken in a way that cannot be repaired. Other teeth may need removal because they are poorly positioned in the mouth (such as impacted teeth), or in preparation for orthodontic treatment.

The removal of a single tooth can lead to problems related to your chewing ability, problems with your jaw joint, and shifting teeth, which can have a major impact on your dental health.

To avoid these complications, in most cases, Drs. Lyn or Tofigh will discuss alternatives to extractions as well as replacement of the extracted tooth.

The Extraction Process

At the time of extraction the doctor will need to numb your tooth, jaw bone and gums that surround the area with a local anesthetic.

During the extraction process you will feel a lot of pressure. This is from the process of firmly rocking the tooth in order to widen the socket for removal.

You feel the pressure without pain as the anesthetic has numbed the nerves stopping the transference of pain, yet the nerves that transmit pressure are not profoundly affected.

If you do feel pain at any time during the extraction please let us know right away.

Sectioning a tooth

Some teeth require sectioning. This is a very common procedure done when a tooth is so firmly anchored in its socket or the root is curved and the socket can’t expand enough to remove it. The doctor simply cuts the tooth into sections then removes each section one at a time.

After Tooth Extraction

After tooth extraction, it’s important for a blood clot to form to stop the bleeding and begin the healing process. Bite on a gauze pad for 30-45 minutes immediately after the appointment. If the bleeding or oozing still persists, place another gauze pad and bite firmly for another 30 minutes. You may have to do this several times to staunch the flow of blood.

After the blood clot forms it is important to not disturb or dislodge the clot. Do not rinse vigorously, suck on straws, smoke, drink alcohol or brush teeth next to the extraction site for 72 hours. These activities may dislodge or dissolve the clot and hinder the healing process. Limit vigorous exercise for the next 24 hours, as this increases blood pressure and may cause more bleeding from the extraction site.

After the tooth is extracted you may feel some pain and experience some swelling. An ice pack or an unopened bag of frozen peas or corn applied to the area will keep swelling to a minimum. Take pain medications as prescribed. The swelling usually subsides after 48 hours.

Use pain medication as directed. Call our office if the medication doesn’t seem to be working. If antibiotics are prescribed, continue to take them for the indicated length of time even if signs and symptoms of infection are gone. Drink lots of fluids and eat nutritious, soft food on the day of the extraction. You can eat normally as soon as you are comfortable.

It is important to resume your normal dental routine after 24 hours. This should include brushing and flossing your teeth at least once a day. This will speed healing and help keep your mouth fresh and clean.

After a few days you should feel fine and can resume your normal activities. If you have heavy bleeding, severe pain, continued swelling for 2-3 days, or a reaction to the medication, call our office immediately.

I saw Dr. Lyn on Monday, Aug. 28, 2017 with an infected tooth that I wanted taken out. My visit was scheduled as a consultation but when Dr. Lyn saw the discomfort I was in, he gave me the option of getting it extracted that day. I was so thrilled he did that for me because I couldn't handle the pain any more. I also got a bone graph done. He was so nice, patient and professional. He told me exactly what he was going to do and also talked to me during the procedure, which I really appreciated. He was done in 20 minutes. It's been two days since I had it done and I don't have anymore pain. I would highly recommend all of my family and friends go see Dr. Lyn if they ever need oral surgery done. It was a very pleasant experience.

I highly recommend this office. The staff is very courteous, friendly, competent, & professional. Dr. Lyn displayed a Patient First Attitude! He was very attentive to my 16 year old son who had to have a few teeth extracted and a bone marrow removed from under his gum line. Dr. Lyn is an excellent oral surgeon, extremely professional and very knowledgeable in his field. After my son's initial exam and prior to the oral surgery, I called the office with a few "motherly" concerns/fears, Dr. Lyn called me back quickly and addressed my concerns and put my fears at ease. He made sure I was comfortable and that my son received the best dentistry service. The surgery went extremely well and my son is healing well. Dr. Lyn and his staff are the BEST!

If fear and trepidation are key words you would use to describe how you feel about the thought of getting a tooth extracted, believe I'm right there with you. I had to have three teeth pulled and feared the entire process, my anxiety level was off the charts. Starting with Jenna getting my appt set up and working with us patiently to get the right insurance information for them to the office staff at the the Nottingham location this was a remarkably pleasant experience. I never once felt like I was just "another patient." As for the extraction process, I can't thank Dr. Lyn enough. From his time to explain the procedure and the available options, to his precise execution of the extractions, he was professional while coming across as approachable and friendly which went a long way in lowering my anxiety. I am writing this 24 hours after having three teeth extracted and have to say that I'm amazed at how little pain or discomfort I've experienced. If you have an inherent fear of dentists and the thought of an extraction makes you cringe, take my advice and make an appt to see Dr. Lyn and the staff at Nottingham, not only will they take great care of you but you may be surprised at how painless the process can be when you have the right doctor. Dr. Lyn, you are truly the Bob Marley of oral surgery.

I was informed by my primary Dentist that I needed to see an Oral Surgeon. I was given a referral, the referred Dr's ratings weren't impressive to me. I searched for the best Oral Surgeons in the area, and found Dr. Lyn. The Tooth was extracted before i realized it. I only used gauze once after leaving the Dr. with no discomfort at all.

Patient Review By NINA K

If I ever have to have any more oral work done, I will certainly visit Dr. Lyn again. I cannot take epinephrine for dental procedures and he assured me that what he would be giving me was going to work. And it did!!! I have had other bad experiences with dentists and I was very apprehensive as to the outcome. I didn't even feel the tooth being extracted. Thank you, Dr. Lyn
